The topic of membranes for laying under tiles has existed abroad for more than 20 years. The range of applications is huge, but I will try to tell you slowly.

Types of membranes: distribution, for sealing, combined, for laying cables, including heat-reflecting, there are also with insulation, noise absorption.

Where the membrane is used:

For modular construction, or laying tiles on OSB, plywood, boards…etc. I think it was invented for this 20 years ago, because there were no large formats;
For laying large-format tiles on the floor, starting from the format of 1200 x 600 mm and more. In addition, the thinner the tile, the greater the need for a membrane, even for the format of 600 x 600
For large rooms, more than 30-40 sq.m. in one plane. Especially for narrow and long rooms;
For organizing several rooms in a single plane
For sealing when laying tiles in bathrooms, showers, open balconies, terraces…etc.
For warm floors, both under cables and under the mat;
For those rooms with significant temperature differences
Some membranes that remove moisture even after laying the tiles will allow SIGNIFICANTLY to speed up the repair and improve the uniformity and gradualness of the drying of the screed

But laying a membrane is not a panacea for cracking. It can help with the appearance of cracks and horizontal expansions. But with vertical movements, bends, it will help, but with a small % probability. Therefore, when performing the work, you need to pay attention to the preparation of the base, the correct damper joints, the correct compensation joints, the correct distance between the tiles and to the objects with which the tile contacts. The larger the tile, the larger the single plane of the tile, the greater the thickness between the tiles should be. Therefore, the thinner the seam, the greater the likelihood of cracks appearing … etc.
